“Hell & High Water” Forum

On February 27, 2012, a full house attended Sustainable San Rafael’s “Hell and High Water” event to hear author Mark Hertsgaard discuss local adaptation to climate change and his book, Hot, Living Through the Next Fifty Years on Earth.

His key point was that today we have to walk two paths: On one hand we must find ways to “Manage the unavoidable” in order to deal with temperature increase and sea level rise of 3 to 6 feet that is locked-in by carbon that is already in the atmosphere. At the same time, we must find the political will to achieve massive reductions in future carbon emissions in order to “Avoid the unmanagable” – temperture increases and sea level rise so great they would end life as we know it.
